Walking Is Beneficial To Your Health And Friendship

Walking Is Beneficial To Your Health And Friendship:

Many studies suggest that walking is beneficial to your wellbeing, but it can be difficult to break out of the “around the block” routine and into something more exciting and enjoyable.

Long-distance walking activities help you stay in shape, and if you walk for a good cause, you can raise money for charities in need. Walking as part of a group has the added benefit of increasing fun, keeping you concentrated, and fostering great friendships.

What exactly is a walking squad, though? Women and men, neighbors, friends, relatives, spouses, or new acquaintances, from the same town or around the world, form teams in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer to take personal steps (literally) in the battle against breast cancer.

The "Back of the Pack Walkers" is one squad that enjoys a good laugh. It is made up of nearly ten women who gather each year in Washington, D.C. for the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer. They are walking in honor of a classmate, Robyn Cain, who died of breast cancer in 2004. “After spending so much time together, practicing and at the Walk,” team captain Candi Hoffman says, “I consider the girls on my team to be some of my best friends.”

“Team Maureen” is a regular at the Avon Walk Chicago, with participants dressed in bright green shirts participating as walkers, volunteers, and cheerleaders. The 2006 squad, according to Donna Lahey, captain of "Team Maureen," has 64 members ranging in age from 1 to 81. Maureen Buescher, who died of breast cancer in 2002, inspired the team's name. It includes family and friends who are walking for their own well-being as well as the well-being of all women.

From April to October, Mike McElduff has led "Team Peggy's Spirit," named after his mother, at all eight Avon Walk events around the world. McElduff's siblings, relatives, and lone walkers make up "Peggy's Spirit," which seeks camaraderie as they tackle the long walk.
